Joy, is a 2015 American biographical film by David O Russel, inspired from the life of Joy Mangano, an entrepreneur. Jennifer Lawrence essays the titular role of Joy Mangano. Joy Mangano was a divorced mother with two children in 1990, when she invented the Miracle Mop, a self-wringing plastic mop with a head made from a continuous loop of cotton that can be easily wrung out without getting the user’s hands wet. This film depicts how she made a prototype and manufactured 100 units initially, sold the mop at trade shows and in local stores of Long Island, later she went on-air at QVC to sell it herself and ended up selling 18000 mops in less than 30 minutes. With this invention, she became an overnight success, after which she patented many products.
The lead protagonist Joy in the film had to face lot of challenges and she was at an all time low phase of life, when an idea stuck her. Being divorced, single mother to two kids, daughter of separated parents, the need to take care of mother, children, grandmother, she had a huge list of responsibilities. To add to this, she was constantly humiliated by her half-sister Peggy, an achiever in life. Joy invents miracle mop, when she was trying to mop up the mess created by breakage of wine glasses and gets cuts on her palm, while wringing the mop. That is when she gets the idea of making self-wringing mop. The story of Joy lets us know, how one can excel even in midst of adversities. All of us have an entrepreneur within us. But are we mindful towards the same ? Joy tells us to cultivate greater precisions in life by being consciously aware of our every action, thought and emotion. We need to have enhanced skills for observation. Just making this miracle mop was not sufficient, she fought all adversities to sell and market this product. And that is where a start-up under an able leadership turns out to be a brand in itself. But the challenges hardly stop even after become a brand and this happened with Joy also getting to face challenges thrown in front of her from unexpected corners. It is great to understand, how she fought all the challenges and emerged victorious.
Certainly, it needs great amount of courage to step out of our comfort zone and take the risk of being an entrepreneur and have a start-up. The first step might be very difficult and to establish one’s credibility in the market may seem to be an uphill task. But passion, determination, risk-taking capability, constant eye for the details, a leader empowering his / her team members, an urge for constant reinvention, not quitting in adversities, fighting the challenges, being mindful of happenings in and around etc. would certainly facilitate an entrepreneur to develop his or her startup into a brand.
Joy would certainly inspire you to evolve into a brand yourself.
